Understanding Resilience – Working with Parents in Sport

“When the stadium lights dim and the crowd fades, what remains is the athlete’s inner voice—the one that decides whether they rise again or retreat.”

Resilience refers to the capacity of a athlete to bounce back even after setback, adversity , failures etc.

such as injuries, poor performance, or high-pressure situations—to maintain or return to high-level functioning or optimal level of functioning. It involves positive mindset , positive adaptation, and utilizing personal resources to thrive despite of  challenges and setbacks. 

 Mental toughness

Mental toughness is the ability to remain resilient, confident, and focused, allowing individuals to persist through pressure, adversity, and setbacks. mental toughness is a skill which can be developed by positive self-talk, overcoming challenges in a positive manner. generally speaking there four types of C's in mental toughness which sports psychologist often use with elite athletes.

  • Control: Managing emotions and maintaining a "can-do" attitude.
  • Commitment: Persisting through obstacles to achieve goals, regardless of challenges.
  • Challenge: Viewing difficulties as opportunities to learn rather than threats.
  • Confidence: Maintaining self-belief in your abilities and decisions. 
  •   Recovery

    Its a phase where muscle rebuild, body gains strength and mind resets. athletes goes through various types of recovery such as 

    • Physical Recovery: Sleep, hydration, nutrition, and active rest restore the body.

    • Mental Recovery: Reflection, mindfulness, and positive self-talk rebuild confidence.

    • Emotional Recovery: Support from coaches, teammates, and loved ones keeps motivation alive.
