In this blog we shall know what does school counseling mean, ever felt like what to do next in reference to career? or  want to talk to someone when you are teased or bullied in school or felt anxious on exam day or whenever you are preparing for exam?. In all these school counselor play a vital role.So what does school counselor/ psychologist mean?

School counseling
provides holistic support for students' academic, career, college, and social-emotional growth through individual/group sessions, classroom guidance, and consultation, helping them navigate challenges like anxiety, bullying, and family issues, while also supporting teachers and parents to create a positive,  school environment for overall student well-being and success. It's a integral part of modern education, evolving from just vocational guidance to a vital mental health and developmental service. 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITY OF SCHOOL COUNSELOR

  • Conduct psychological assessments
  • Observe students in classroom
  • Individual counseling
  • Classroom and other guidance activities
  •  Providing career guidance
  • Conduct informal assessments(interview,observation)
  • Developmental activities

School counselor use variety of techniques for treating anxiety, socio- emotional issues, confidence building etc, some of the techniques are as follows

  1. Thought record keeping/journaling
  2. Writing positive affirmation
  3. Gratitude journal
  4. Writing strength and weakness
  5. Activity scheduling
  6. Emotions rating scale
  7. Guided discovery/Visualization
  8. Role play

Techniques such as Role-play, writing positive affirmation , gratitude journal and emotions rating and writing their  strengths and weakness are mainly used for children of nursery, pre-k and std 1, 2. 

 A child of std 1 who is bullied, teased in school, cannot pay attention in her studies, her grades have reduced, low self- esteem(confidence) can't mingle with her peers , doesn't listens to teachers instruction for her the following plan can be used.

  The intervention plan can be put like this

  1.  We can start with role playing technique 
  2. It can be followed by writing positive affirmation or keeping a thought record if he/she felt something positive during role.( as a homework we can give them to write gratitude journal).
  3. We can again do role play or visualization to see any  progress in self-confidence. 
  4. We can end with emotions rating (how she feels after doing following activities)

Intervention plan like this can be used for children of std1,2 who struggle with self- confidence.
